Teen Caught with Sawed-Off Shotgun at School
On April 4, 2009, a social worker tackles a 17 year old who was trying to bring a sawed-off shotgun into Detroit city school. That social worker is now being hailed as a hero. The 17-year-old was allegedly carrying a sawed-off shotgun as he rushed through the school metal detector when the social worker wrestled him to the ground. Luckily, no one was injured.
According to reports, the 17-year-old got the gun from a vehicle after he had an argument with a fellow student at the school. This shows another reason why metal detectors at schools are a good thing. Several people could have been injured or killed because of an angry 17-year-old boy.
The social worker, Idris Herring, said he saw the teen rush through the walk through metal detector at Westside Academy and glimpsed what looked a gun. Franchott Cooper, a social services coordinator, called Herring a Superman and said, “He’d give the shirt off his back to any kid that needed it”.
According to police, there is no indication that the shotgun was even loaded. The boy ran after he was tackled and is now sought by the Detroit police for questioning.
There is still some confusion as to how the 17-year-old got into the school. According to one report he may have gotten through a propped open door, bypassing all metal detectors. There is also some confusion as to whether he is a new student or a former student. If he is a former student, he should not have been there in the first place.
